The Painting from Caravaggio Collection that most appeals to
me was the “Saint Jerome” This oil painting caught my eye because of the
mystery in this painting and the deep transition of light and dark areas. The
room is dark all around this man and the white shadow that outlines him, brings
his thin frame into view. This painting shows great Chiaroscuro. The high drama
defiantly got me thinking about this painting. I think this painting shows one
man and puts so many questions in your mind. Who is he? What is he doing in the
painting? Why is so focused, and is his time running out? He had to be a holy
man of great wisdom, the halo on top of his head would symbolize this and the
heavy lighting around him gives dimension to his feeble body and the red cover
tangling around his exposed body. This was Baroque Era and this visual art makes
you wonder was this ,the genre scene in this day. This visual art of “Saint
Jerome” takes me back in my mind to that time frame. The name saint stands out
as well. A saint is a person who is holy and very knowledge. I think he was as
a saint. I think this man was translating the holy bible and the skull was
there to remind him that is fate might soon be death. But God’s word will live
forever.

I agree that this painting can make a person wonder what the background of the exact story was. I liked how you associated the fact that he was a saint into your thoughts and your analysis and interpretation of the painting overall.
ReplyDeleteNice entry, Austin. I agree with Moriah that you did a nice job with your description. St. Jerome is in fact translating a Bible, which is one of the things he was known for. The bright red robe is symbolic of his being a cardinal, and I believe you are correct that the skull can symbolize mortality and how this life is temporary. The dramatic lighting and depiction of the subject are very Baroque!
