Assignment 2 - Blog: This Age of Satire

One example of this satire would be the T.V show “The Larry Sanders Show” this was known for one of the greatest satire of entertainment in the world ever credited. This show would have different celebrities on the show and they would mock them and make fun of them, to the point, I’m surprised people kept lining up for this kind of ridicule.
I’m not sure if I think satire is effective way to address some negative aspects of society. I’m sure some of the issues on society are very sensitive to others and mocking them might not be the best thing for drawling in viewers. I think I would take some things to heart. I don’t think I would enjoy shows that make fun or mock others. However the show was a hit, so people must have had a sense of humor. The series ranked 38 on TV Guide 50 Greatest T.V Shows of All Time. It also won 24 major awards.
I do believe that some of these scripts do cross the line and can be offensive, but I do understand also that there is all different types of entertainment and these satire show’s seem to be a big hit. People seemed to tune in and enjoy the sitcom. If Hollywood could make fun of them self, then I guess other people were okay with it to.

  1. That's an interesting example and perspective. I wonder if the show worked the way it did because it wasn't so much mocking the individuals but the culture's obsession with celebrity and the way there's a whole other industry built up around promoting them. So the actors were poking fun at themselves and the audience was also sort of laughing at itself!
