This photo almost looks like it was taken at a club
atmosphere. On the left hand side you can see bleachers of people hanging out
and an enjoying one anthers company. Then in the middle of the wide floor you
can see thousands of people standing around and dancing. This place looks to be
hopping. Their attire of clothing is very proper. It looks like most of the men
are wearing suites with ties and the women are dress up wearing their dresses,
high heels and wearing hats. This could also be a dance competition. I noticed
at the bottom right hand side there is a man with a camera. So it had to be an
event that was important enough to want to capture the moments. Maybe it was a
wedding? I do see the dancers performing and everyone is responding. The women
with her hand up in the air, seems to be doing the jitterbug dance. Then there are
two women and another man dancing. Even in 1938 dance seemed to be very
important and part of the responding, creating and performing world.

Good descriptions and guesses. I think it could be a dance competition, and everyone is letting loose! Performance and dancing were a big deal, and something you would want to dress nicely to do. Well done.
